Edward "Ed" Capps was born in Tennessee about February 1860, the son of Robert Capps Sr (ca 1827–1898) and Ann Catharine (Pash) Capps (ca 1835–1875).

He was married on June 12, 1878 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tennessee to Mary Jane Driskell (1862–1931), the daughter of David T Driskell (1827–1863) and Frances Elizabeth (Herrell) Driskell (1838–1906).

A bartender in a saloon in Nashville, Ed was about 57 years old and married when he passed away in October 1917, and burial was in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
