Mr. George E. Googe, age 86 of Oliver Springs passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 24, 2015.
He was born in Coalfield and was a member of Middle Creek Baptist Church. He was a disabled veteran, serving our country in the U.S. Army for 6 years. His unit, the 24th Infantry Division, was one of the first to be deployed to Korea. This unit had been retired, but has recently been re-activated in Fort Jackson, SC.
George was very proud of his military career and continued to support it by serving as a member of the VFW, Korean War Association, American Legion, and was a life member of the DAV and DAVA.
He had previously worked in law enforcement. He had a passion for his animals, and loved plants, rocks (rough to finish) and was co-owner of The Rock Shop in Oliver Springs. He was an active member of the Smokey Mountain Mineral Society.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Elizabeth (Liles) Googe; Son, Jerry Lynn Googe;
Three brothers and one sister.
He is survived by his wife, of 38 years, Barbara Isenberg Googe of Oliver Springs;
Children, Shyrl Ann Googe, Wilford (Suling) Googe, George Googe, Guy (Lisa) Googe, Hugh Googe, Fairlena Googe;
Daughter-in-law, Karen Googe;
Sister, Anna Bell (Don) Rather of Oliver Springs;
Brothers, Millard W. (Claudia) Googe of Louisiana and Marvin S. (Jerry) Liles of New York;
And his loving "Googe Grandchildren" Jeremiah, Talen, Cole, Andrew, Jon, Hope, Songli;
And many other family members, neighbors and good friends.
George was very instrumental in the planning and building of the DAV Building (Chapter 26) 530 Kingston Avenue, Oliver Springs. The family will receive friends for him there on Saturday, March 28, 2015 from 8:30-10:00 am.
The funeral service will begin at 10am with Bro. Brooky Gray and Bro. Omer Cox speaking.
Interment will be in Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery, 7430 Pelleaux Rd, Knoxville, TN.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Jackson Funeral Services to assist with funeral costs.
