Obituary - Ruthven Free Press - July 2, 1958
Ione Caroline Brady was born in Clay County, southwest of Ruthven, on April 20, 1893, the daughter of Ralph and Alice Whiteford. On Sunday, June 15, at 10:40 a.m., she passed quietly from this life to the better life beyond. Mrs. Brady had reached the age of 65 years one month and twenty-five days at the time of her death.
Mrs. Brady had resided in the Ruthven and Lake Center community through her life. From their farm southwest of Ruthven, her parents moved to the lake Center vicinity. There, she grew to young woman-hood. Ione attended several rural schools before graduation from the Lake Center High School. Her love for small children prompted her to enter the teaching profession. After having attended college at Humboldt, Iowa, and Iowa State Teachers College, she returned to the Lake Center community where she spent the next seven years teaching school.
On February 8, 1919, she was united in marriage to Harley I. Brady. To this union was born two fine sons, Harold and Eugene, both of Ruthven. The family resided on a farm south of Terril, until 1923, when they moved to the Ruthven vicinity.
For several years, Mrs. Brady had been compelled to seek medical relief for her asthmatic condition. The constant distress, which she silently suffered through, caused her to forsake many of the community functions, that had given her so much pleasure in the past. This winter and spring, Iona had received care at the Mayo Clinic and Methodist Hospital on four different occasions. Each time she returned home, confident in the future that lay ahead. On Monday, June 9th she was again stricken and taken to the Spencer Hospital where she passed quietly away on Sunday morning.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Brady had been a true and loyal christian. On June 28, 1927 she was received into the fellowship of the Ruthven Methodist Church, making her confession of faith to Pastor O. E. Schaal. Until her failing health prevented it, she regularily attended divine services, with a quiet sincerity and steadfast faith. Despite her frail body, she was at services, only two weeks prior to her passing, entering and leaving with a smile, as was typical of her through the years.
Her fellowship with friends was enriched through her membership in the Kill Kare Klub, The Woman's Society of Christian Service and various church organizations.
Ione Brady is survived by her faithful husband, H. I. Brady, two sons, Harold and Eugene, and four grandchildren, Jerry, Patricia, John Charles and Barbara, all of Ruthven. In addition, she leaves to mourn her passing two brothers, Ernest and Glen Whiteford of Windom, Minnesota; four sisters, Mrs. Harry Whitman of Ruthven; Mrs. Ernest Hyer and Mrs. William Hildreth, both of Estherville; and Mrs. Arthur Nelson of Fort Dodge. Her parents and one sister, Mrs. Hazel Martin, have preceded her in death.
Mrs. Brady spent her years, raising and caring for her family, with a steadfast love. As a wife and mother, she had often forsaken her own needs and pleasures to administer and care for those of her family. Through the years, she enjoyed the friendship of this community. Her friendly smile and cheery hello had made her known to both old and young. Mrs. Brady's passing leaves a deep void in the heart of her family, relatives and friends. But to these, still will remain the memory of her loving touch and helping hand.
Funeral services were conducted on June 17, at 1:30 p.m. from the Lightle Funeral Home and at 2 p.m. at the Ruthven Methodist Church, by Rev. W. Frank. A mixed quartet, consisting of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Carpenter, Harry Nelson and Mrs. Lester Ziestra sang two of her favorite hymns: "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Rock of Ages."
Mrs. Brady was laid to rest in Crown Hill Cemetery. Her life long friends and neighbors, Bill Prichard, Floyd Eaton, George Taylor, Richard Eaton, George Taylor, Richard Eaton, Oscar Nelison and Peter Hermanson served as pallbearers.
The Kill Kare Club and the Alice Circle, of which Mrs. Brady was a member served dinner for the relatives prior to the services and a lunch following the services at the cemetery.
