Harriett Atkinson Clemons passed away peacefully Monday, March 23, 2015. She was 92.
Honorary pallbearers will be Leland Clemons Jr., Stockton Clemons, Phillip Clemons, Townes Clemons, Allen Atkinson, Elliott Atkinson Jr., Clayton Atkinson, Jess Boulware, Elliott Kerlin and Charles Duke.
Harriett Clemons was born Feb. 1, 1923, in Maysfield.
She graduated with honors from Texas Woman's University in 1944. Following graduation, Harriett Clemons began a brief but rewarding career as a music teacher as well as concert pianist. As an accomplished musician, she composed music for several children's poems, as well as a patriotic hymn, "Soul of America."
In 1947, Harriett Atkinson married Heywood Clemons, her beloved and devoted husband of over 65 years.
In 1950, Harriett Clemons happily transitioned from teacher to mother and steadfast supporter of her husband and his own successful career. She and her young family moved to Fort Worth in 1954 and in that same year joined First Presbyterian Church, where through over 60 years of faithful service to God, she served as a Sunday school teacher and an elder, and joined her husband in supporting Austin College during his over 25 years as trustee. She took great pride in being the oldest regular attendee to her Bible Study Fellowship group. As a wonderful hostess and active participant in numerous civic organizations, Harriett Clemons was a past president of the '93 Club of the Fort Worth Woman's Club. She served on the boards of The Van Cliburn Foundation and Schola Cantorum, and was a member of the Jewel Charity Ball, the DAR and Sigma Alpha Iota. The family would like to express its special thanks to Rachael Conley and Paulette Azbill for the special care given by them to both Harriett and Heywood Clemons.
Harriett Clemons was preceded in death by her husband, Heywood; son, Lewis Heywood Clemons; brother, Elliot Atkinson; and sisters, Emma Spann and Mary Virginia Smither.
Survivors: Her sons, Leland Carroll Clemons and wife, Barbara, William Hubert Clemons and wife, Sharon; grandchildren, Leland Carroll Clemons Jr. and wife, Kristin, Stockton Beggs Clemons and wife, Sarah, Phillip Tobin Clemons and Charles Townes Clemons and wife, Mimi; and great-grandchildren, Stockton Jr., Lilly, Charlotte, Mercer and Finn Clemons.
