James Patterson Beard was born August 12,1825 in Newberry County, South Carolina. He was the son of William Beard Jr. (1776-1838). & Jane Patterson Beard (1785-1866). His paternal grandparents' were William Beard Sr. & Eleanor, Scotch- Irish immigrants who arrived in South Carolina from Ulster Province, Ireland on the ship Brittannia in 1768 & were granted 350 acres of land in Newberry County on Mulberry Branch of Duncan Creek, a tributary of Enoree River, in the northwestern corner of South Carolina. James's maternal grandparents' are believed to be Josiah Patterson (1751-1825). & Margaret Carson (1761-1819) who came from Ulster to South Carolina around 1766. Josiah Patterson was a Revolutionary War Soldier. In 1849 James Patterson Beard & Martha Ann Palmer were married in Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

They are Edna Beard Cromwell's parents'.
