He served in the Vietnam War as a Navy airman and was stationed aboard the USS Constellation (CVA 64).
He was appointed to the Lowell Police Department on Jan. 7, 1980. In August 1987, he was promoted to the rank of sergeant and for many years, he was a detective on the vice squad. His most recent assignment was in the Detail Office. He retired from the police force on April 19.
During his 23-year police career he received numerous commendations, including one in 1981 for his work on an armed robbery at the Pawtucket Pharmacy. He was a member of the Massachusetts Police Association, the International Brotherhood of Police Officers - Local 600, the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund and was the past president of the Lowell Police Relief Association.
He was a member the Lowell Lodge of Elks No. 87, the East End Club, New Silver Beach Improvement Association. He also was a notary public for the commonwealth of Massachusetts. He was a member of Ste. Jeanne d'Arc Church in Lowell.
He is survived by his companion of 27 years, Ann Bissonnette, and her children, Marcia A. Bissonnette, Christine M. Cournoyer and her husband Richard, Phillip M. Bissonnette and his wife Patricia, and Paul A. Bissonnette and his wife Lori; and Ms. Bissonnette's six grandchildren. He also leaves a brother, John R. Abbott and his wife Juanita; three sisters, Sandra Baxter and her husband James, Jo-An Luis and her husband Orlando, and Debra Bolio; also many nieces and nephews.
