Lena “Tootie” Mackey Shuford passed away on Friday, March 20, 2015 at her home. She was born on September 22, 1930 to JM and Daphne Mackey and was preceded in death by her husband Bill Shuford, her brother Pat Mackey and her sister Frances Deustch.

She is survived by her children and their spouses Elise and Robert Running, Mike and Patti Shuford and Mark Shuford and Monique Derby. She is also survived by her grandchildren Lindsey Shuford, Jessica Shuford, Samantha Shuford and Dr. Kati Running. Surviving siblings include Mary Jane Burgin and Bill Mackey.

Tootie was known to everyone as the owner of Shuford Furniture Co. which she successfully operated for 47 years. After retirement she became a fixture in the kitchen at Shuford Convenience where she loved spending time with the customers and providing them with her famous “Tootie Specials” and desserts on Friday.

Her most treasured accomplishment was that of Mother and Maw-Maw to her children and grandchildren. Tootie loved her family and friends. A perfect day for her was to be surrounded by both

A memorial service will be held Monday, March 23, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. at Greenlee Baptist Church. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m., prior to the service, at the church.

In lieu of flowers the family requests contributions be made to Hospice of McDowell County, 575 Airport Road, Marion, NC and/or Healing Hearts Small Animal Rescue, Inc., P.O. Box 1321, Old Fort, NC 28762, both of which held a special place in her heart and in the hearts of her family.

To quote Tootie, “If you want to do something that will make an impression on a child, take them fishing!!”
