This April 27, 2015, is the 150th anniversary of the greatest maritime loss in U.S. history - the explosion and sinking of the steamer "Sultana" resulting in the deaths of some 1547 (some estimate as high as 2400) Union soldiers being returned to their homes from the Andersonville prison after the end of the Civil War. A monument at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery provides commemoration for these unfortunate soldiers. More information is available online and elsewhere.
