William V. Benson

Cook, Wash. – A Mass of Christian burial for William V. Benson will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday at Rock Creek Community Center in Stevenson. Mr. Benson died of cancer Tuesday, June 9, at his home in Cook. He was 66.

Born July 25, 1925, in Longview, Mr. Benson had lived in Skamania County since 1968. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II and was a retired long-haul truck driver with Frey Miller Trucking of East Chicago, Ill. He also had worked as a deep-sea diver and a pile driver. He served as Skamania County commissioner form 1981 to 1988. Mr. Benson was a member of Carpenters Local 2416 in Portland and Elks Lodge 823 in Vancouver, and he was master of Mount Pleasant Grange in Washougal and a former state grange deputy.

Survivors include his wife, Icel at home; seven step-daughters, Marion of Lake Oswego, Ore., Margaret Nicholson and Joanne Reichenberger, both of Eugene, Donna King of Roseburg, Ore., Anita Jeffs of Richland, Wash., Virginia Hansel of Pullman, Wash., and Jean Johanson of Bend, Ore.; three step-sons, Joe Ficek of Portland, Ernest Gahimer of Omak, Wash., and Frank Gahimer of Richland; two sisters, Hazel Alonzo of Vacaville, Calif., and Mercile McKinney of Salem; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The casket will be open until 8 tonight and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Straub's Funeral Home in Camas. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant Grange Cemetery in Washougal.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, Skamania County Branch, Stevenson, Wash.
