In total, there was seven brothers: Andrew, Joseph, Mike, Frank, Martin , John & Stanislaus (John Stanley)that immigrated from Prussia in the 1800's. They were seperated from their parents, four sisters and one other brother. Life in America offered prosperity, opportuniy, and many other "American dreams".
Andrew immigrated in the United States in June of 1866. In addition, so did the Frank and Ragina Hollis family. Ironically, Andrew Later married their daughter, Mary.
After arriving in New York the immigrants settled in Ege, Indiana. Soon after, in August of 1872, Andrew bought land in Noble County, Indiana for the sum of $1215.00. As well, on November 5,1872 Andrew became a citizen of the United States. To complete everything, Andrew married Marry Hollis on October 6, 1873. At the time of their marriage, Andrew was 37 years old and Mary was only 15 years old.
Together, Andrew and Mary had 16 children over the course of their Marriage. The children are as follows: 1)Agnes(m.William Laskaski) Kostielney, 2)Joseph (m.Rose Molargik)Kostielney, 3) John (m. Anna Kiszka) Kostielney, 4) Frank Kostielney(died of TB), 5) Mary Kostielney(died of TB), 6) Anthony Kostielney(died of TB), 7) Steven (m.Mary Holovinski)Kostielney, 8)Jacob (m. Josephine Suchy) Kostielney. 9) Andrew Kostielney, 10) Martin (m. Annie Bianski) Kostielney, 11) Rosa(m.Andrew Sikorski)Kostielney, 12) Helen Kostielney(died of TB), 13) Genevieve Kostielney( died of TB), 14) Bernard(m.Marrie Schmidt)Kostielney, 15)Margaret(m.Andrew Oakes) Kostielney & 16)Peter (m.Bernice Sobeski ) Kostielney. Andrew & Mary also raised their grandson, Jerome Kostielney, after his mother, Mary, died of TB when Jerome was two years old.
Andrew & Mary lived just over a mile from Mary's parents, Frank and Regina Hollis. By this time other Kostielney brothers' had immigrated from Prussia. Together the Kostielney and Hollis families' built their own Polish community. In 1886, the Catholic Church & school was built, but it burned down years later, and another church had to be built. Andrew Kostielney and Frank Hollis worked for the New York Central Railroad. They put the first railroad tracks in Indiana by Goshen and Wawaka, Indiana, this is east of Elkhart, Indiana.
Andrew's wife, Mary, died at the age of 56 leaving Andrew and 11 children behind. Andrew kept the family together, but died seven years later, at the age of 86. Mr. and Mrs. Kostielney are both interned at the Ege Catholic cemetery.
