Sim Beene, 83, former mayor of Greenville and county clerk of Hunt County, died at 9 a.m. Thursday in a Dallas hospital. Mr. Beene, who resided at 3518 Bourland, had been in failing health for several years.

A 52-year-resident of Greenville, he for many years was an active leader in governmental and civic affairs. Born in Tupelo, Miss. July 19, 1883, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Beene, he came to Texas at the age of 9. In his earlier years here, he was employed as a clerk for Naude Burnett Grocery.

He became a deputy in the county clerk’s office in 1938. He was elected county clerk in 1942 and served for two terms. He served as mayor of Greenville and later entered the real estate business for a number of years prior to his retirement. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Mr. Beene was married in December of 1941 to May Frazier in Royse City. She preceded him in death in 1942.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today in the Coker-Mathews-Peters Chapel, with the Rev. Howard Jones officiating. Burial will be in Forest Park Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Everett Babb, G.C. Harris, Jimmy Jackson A.A. Langford, Fred Meadows and Tom E. Ellis of Dallas.

He is survived by one son Tom Beene, Dallas; one daughter, Mrs. Albert R. Walker, Dallas; one sister, Mrs. Tom Moore, Royse City, two grandchildren, Susan Beene and Mrs. Howard Tygrett, and several nieces and nephews.
