Robert was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on Leap Day (Feb 29) 1924. He attended L.R. Central High School, graduating in 1941. He worked a bit in his uncle Devereux's grocery store and also worked for General Electric before enlisting in the Navy in 1942. He was stationed at NAS Norman, Oklahoma as a gunnery instructor. There he met Jean Sheehy and they married in 1945, two weeks before VJ Day. After the war, he moved to his new wife's hometown of Detroit, where he worked in the auto factory until landing a job in the Post Office. They had six children together. After Jean died in 1979, he remarried in 1981 and had a daughter in 1985.
