Sarah was the daughter of Lawson and Eliza Ann (Smith) Hopkins. Her family moved to Brown County, Wisconsin in the late 1840s.

Sarah married Henry Seymour Pelton, son of Jonathan and Caroline (Seymour) Pelton, on 13 Nov 1849 in De Pere, Brown, Wisconsin. They had four children: Caroline, Charles, Mary and Ella.

Sarah's parents returned to Essex County, Massachusetts by 1855. Her father died and in 1860 her Mother returned to her home state of New Hampshire. In 1860 Sarah and her daughter Ella were living in Strafford County, NH with her mother. Around 1861 Henry and Sarah divorced. By 1870 Sarah had returned to Essex County, Massachusetts with all three of her daughters. She and daughters Caroline and Mary were working in a woolen mill.

PELTON—In South Boston, April 5, Sarah A., widow of Henry S. Pelton, 83 yrs. 11 mos. Services from the home of her daughter, Mrs. Charles H. Kimball, April 7, at 11 a. m. Burial at Ridgewood Cemetery, North Andover. Post Post, April 6, 1916.
