Herbert Long was a Police Officer for Ely, Nevada for 6 years. He died in the line of duty at age 34. He was on night duty when he heard gunshots. When he went to investigate, he found a Bar Owner, Bart Smithson, taking target practice with a handgun inside the Bar, the Palace Club. He took the man's Revolver, and told him he was giving it to the District Attorney in the morning. When he turned to walk out, the Bar owner loaded a .25-.35 Rifle behind the counter, and shot Officer Long in the back, which went through his heart. The suspect was arrested and charged, with witnesses testimony.
