The couple moved to Champaign in 1927 and purchased a pharmacy located at 522 E. Green Street. They moved the business to 617 E. Green in 1932.
After their sons' (Arthur and William) graduation from pharmacy school, the family opened two additional stores. Their West Side Pharmacy was opened in 1951 at Springfield and Prospect Avenues.
For many years, Maurice Skelton was active in helping the community develop low-cost housing rentals through the Champaign County Housing Authority. He served as the authority chairman for 16 years.
Housing for the elderly was initiated under federal subsidies on January 1, 1965 when CCHA chose a site for a new eight story apartment building at Second and White Streets. The building, Skelton Place was named in his honor.
He was an active Free Mason and a member of the York Rite and Scottish Rite bodies of masonry. In addition he was a member of the Shrine and Order of the Eastern Star.
