One person died and and another was injured Thursday when their car went over an embankment and crashed onto the southbound lane of Highway 65.

The accident happened at 2:20 p.m., according to a news release from the City of Branson. The Branson Police Department, Branson Fire Department and the Taney County Ambulance District responded to the scene.

According to the city, the vehicle had two elderly occupants, a male and female. The Fire Department used extrication tools to remove the windshield to remove both victims.

The male occupant was pronounced dead on the scene by Taney County Coroner Kevin Tweedy. The female occupant was transported by air ambulance to Springfield Mercy Hospital.

The names of the individuals will be released by the Taney County Coroner after he completes notification of the next of kin.

Officers determined the vehicle was traveling eastbound on the service road adjacent to the highway and travelled over the embankment, eventually coming to rest on the inside southbound lane of Highway 65. Additional details of the accident remain under investigation by the Branson Police Department.

Highway 65 was partially closed for approximately two hours following the accident.
