Donald R. Haakinson
CHEROKEE, Iowa - Donald R. Haakinson, 75, of Cherokee died Sunday, July 4, 1999, at Hilltop Care Center, following a short illness. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Boothby uneral Home in Cherokee, with the Rev. Gary Armstrong officiating. The body was cremated and burial will be at a later date in Hitchcock, S.D. Mr. Haakinson was born Aug. 23, 1923, at Sloan, Iowa, the son of Albert and Opal (Johndreau) Haakinson. He spent his first eight years in Sloan, and then moved to Elk Point, S.D. He lived in the Sioux City and Elk Point area; driving truck, raising livestock, and farming, until 1957, when he moved to Hitchcock, S.D., where he managed a farm elevator and raised livestock.
He served in the United States Army during World War II.
He married Marsh Hein in June of 1965. He enjoyed raising livestock and did so until his retirement. He had lived at the Hilltop Care Center in Cherokee since 1987. Survivors include a brother and his wife: Gail and Jean Haakinson of Clatskanie, Ore.; a sister, Marjorie Maloney of Tucson, Ariz.; two stepsons: Dale Hein of Sioux City, and Howard Hein of Des Moines
