He was born December 30, 1919, at Hoffman, Minnesota, the son of Adolph and Grace Backlund He was a graduate of the Delano, Minnesota high school and of the Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. In 1944, he married Dorline Neuman of Villard at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Minneapolis. Shortly thereafter they moved to Lowry, Minnesota, where Boyd ran the blacksmith shop, and in 1948 they came to Alexandria. He was maintenance engineer for the Alexandria school system for six years. Then he joined the faculty of the Alexandria Vocational Technical Institute, whee he was a welding instructor for 17 years. He was also an Alexandria Township supervisor at the time of his death.
Always handy with tools, he made use of his skills to help out friends and neighbors and was always "on call" to them. He was an ardent hunter and fisherman, enthusiasms he passed on to his sons.
