Born in Reading, he was a son of Ethel (Krammes) Long Marks, of Reading, and the late John B Long.

Long was last employed as a maintenance man by Nicholas Discount City.

A Marine Corps and Army veteran of the Korean War, he was a member of the Lucky Star Athletic Association and the North End Rod & Gun Club.
