Married Anna Johns, daughter of Riley Johns and Sarah Leigh Johns; three children.
In my Grandfather, Archie Perry Winn's home, there was a book, "the Dowling Family of the South" that I remember reading as a young boy. It had the story of the Dowling's that fought at Olustee and depicted one that was killed "while riding a white horse". I do not remember if it was James. But the dead were collected after the battle and brought by the wagon load to Lake City and buried in Oaklawn cemetery:
Oaklawn Cemetery, on the west side of Lake City, is the final resting place for many of the Confederate soldier dead from the February 20, 1864 Battle of Olustee. Many of the graves in this plot are marked as "unknown." This plot is marked by a central monument.
Grandpa Winn's mother was Melissa Dowling -- Billy
