Is 99 Today: Double Celebration: Church Home Observes Thanksgiving and Oldest Resident's Birthday: There will be a double celebration today for the gentle, lovable old ladies who dwell with their memories at the Church Home, 24 Rhode Island Street, for in addition to being Thanksgiving Day, it is the 99th birthday of "Grandma" Sybil Bixby, the oldest resident of this quiet, comfortable retreat for the aged.
Everybody at the Home calls Mrs. Bixby "Grandma", becuase the next oldest resident there is a comparative infant of 89. There will be a special Thanksgiving dinner this noon for the resident occupants, served with all the ceremony and fixin's that go with such a repast, and the whole thing, according to Mrs. Helen B. Chappell, superintendent, "is going to be Grandma's party."
Born in 1828 in Castile, Mrs. Bixby spent most of her life there, and although she is now nearing the century mark, her greatest disappointment is that they will not let her help with the dishes after each meal. She visits around with the other residents considerably, and still appears to find the world a curious and entertaining place.
Mrs. Bixby's husband, a carpenter, has been dead for nearly 40 years, and up to 10 years ago she kept house and did all of her own housework. She has been a resident of the Home for the past two years. Her only son, Fred G. Bixby, the watch doctor of West Genesee Street, is now 70 years old and has three grown sons.
Two daughters, 7 and 9 years old, drowned before her eyes when a carriage backed into a pond by a fractious horse, overturned. Fred Bixby was then two years old, and Grandma Bixby, who had been carrying him in her arms, was unable to save her two little girls.
The telephone, electric light, phonograph, automobile and radio all were unknown when Mrs. Bixby was born. She has seen all these and other changes take place during her lifetime, and today, out of eyes dimmed by age, she looks out on an entirely different kind of world. She cannot see to sew nor to read and she is somewhat hard of hearing, but Miss Jennie Wilson, nurse at the home, summed up the opinion of the other residents there when she said, "She's the dearest little old lady in the world". All of them want to see her reach the century mark, and are looking forward to next Thanksgiving Day to help her celebrate her 100th birthday.

Mrs. Sybil Bixby: Mrs. Sybil Bixby, oldest resident of the Church Home, 24 Rhode Island Street, Buffalo, and for 96 years a resident of Castile, died on Monday, May 14th, in the Home, where she had lived for three years. She was born here on November 30, 1828. Her husband died nearly 40 years ago. Two children were born to them, both of whom drowned when children, and she carried the shadow of that tragedy, of which she was a helpless witness, all her life. She was 99 last Thanksgiving and her wish was to live to be 100. In the Home, where everyone called her Grandma, she was quite indignant when not allowed to help with the dishes or other little tasks. She had been active in mind and body until about two months ago, when she was compelled to take to her bed. There was a party at the Home last Thanksgiving Day, and the board of managers made her a present. Her picture was printed in the newspapers for the first time, and many were the congratulations received by her on that day. Mrs. Helen Chappell, superintendent, promised her a real party on her 100th anniversary, and Grandma was counting on that. However, it was not to be. Within six months of the century mark, she sighed quietly and entered into her last sleep. Funeral services were held on Wednesday morning at the Home, and interment was made in a Buffalo cemetery.
