(Excerpts from an obituary published March 8, 2015 The Gadsden Times): Funeral service for Bertha Mae Hill Phillips, 89, of Southside, will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Southside United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Williams-Southside Cemetery. Williams-Southside Funeral Home will direct. Our mother was a loving and devoted wife to her husband and our dad, Harold, for 50 years. She was a beloved mother, providing our family with a blessed and happy home. Mother loved the Lord and was a lifetime member of Southside United Methodist Church, serving faithfully until the time of her illness. Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Harold Phillips; son-in-law, Bill Stewart; granddaughter, Kelly Marie Phillips; great-grandchildren, Blake Steapleton Jr., Carson Swindall, Lucie and Lillie Grizzard. She is survived by her children, grandchildren, siblings: Hoyt (Martha Jane) Hill, Robert (Roxie) Hill, Billy (the late Evelyn) Hill, Marie (Bill) Barksdale, Ruth (Bob) Partain, Clifford Hill and Alice (James) Clanton. "Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her. Many women do noble things, but you surpass them all," Proverbs 31: 28, 29.
