OBITUARY: Early Preston Merchant Dies From Heart Attack - James G. Smith, one of the early merchants and civic leaders of Preston succumbed to a heart attack Tuesday morning, Oct 23rd, at his home on South Second East street. He has been suffering with heart trouble for some time.
James G. Smith was the son of Samuel Smith and Janette Smith, and was born in Brigham City, Utah, November 3, 1865.
Mr. Smith spent his early days in Brigham as a shoe maker and had many of the prominent men of that district as his clients. He married Mary Louise Gilbert, November 18, 1885 in the Logan Temple, moving then to Smithfield following his trade and farming.
He moved to Preston forty-six years ago, when Preston's population consisted of Jos. Roper, Johnsons, James and Joseph and Parkinson, Ezra West, Wm. Head, Porters, Hollingsworth and some others that have preceeded him in death. The population at that time was scattered and few. Their home was a small two room log house on West Oneida street and the privations of their early existence in Preston can only be realized by those early pioneers who lived them.
Two small children came with them to Idaho but soon others came to bless their home and add to the responsibilities of a hard working father. He toiled on the shoe-makers bench for years and finally added the harness business and later added a few pieces of calico, some sugar, flour and groceries until a thriving general store was evolved from the little "two by four" shoe shop.
He was called on a mission to England when he had seven children and the mother had the care of those small children for more than two years and many days she has been seen sawing wood, and doing the labor of both father and mother while he was serving as a missionary. He has been active in both church and civic affairs all his life. He served as Superintendent of the Preston Sunday school for years and on Stake Auxuliary Boards. He was one of the President's of Seventies Quorum for many years and later advanced to the High Council, where he served for twenty-two years. His life was one of service and high regard for all his fellow men.
Besides his wife, he has ten children: Mrs. John Kelley, Malad; Mrs. W. K. Barton, Preston; J. George Smith, Logan; Mrs. B. M. Winsor, Salt Lake City; Kenneth G. Smith, Driggs; Mrs. P. L. Carver, Pocatello; Mrs. S. L. Morgan, and Earl G. Smith, Denver; Lowell G. Smith, Smithfield and Jos. Dunkley of Preston. He is also survived by 46 grand children and 7 great grandchildren.
Interment was held in the Preston City cemetery.
