John P. Rice
Mr. John P. Rice, 91, died at Harmony House, Mediapolis, at 9:40 a.m Sunday.
A native of Kingston, he farmed in Des Moines County for many years, retiring in 1947 and moving to Mediapolis. He was the son of John and Harriet Mertz Rice and was born Aug. 22, 1871.
Mr. Rice was married to Wilhelmina Johanne Koch on March 5, 1895. They were married at the home of Louis Koch, at Kingston. The officiating clergyman was the Rev. J.P. Hebner.
Mrs. Rice died Dec. 2, 1949.
Mr. Rice was of the Methodist faith.
Mr. Rice survived by 14 sons and daughters: Mrs. Mary Lou Yedlick, 1100 Parkway Drive, with whom he hade his home before entering Harmony House; Mrs. Ruby Engel, Mrs Lena Kramer, and John L. and Edd Rice, all of Burlington; Mrs. Hazel Schultz, Mrs. Edna Smith, Mrs. Nellie Hand, and Ralph and Harold Rice, all of Mediapolis; Mrs. Esther Whitaker, Oakville; Mrs. Hattie Senn, East Moline, Ill.; Mrs. Mabel Rice, Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Grace Gorham, of Durate, Calif.
Also surviving area brother, George Rice, Kingston; a sister, Lena Tee, Mediapolis; 75 grandchildren, 94 great-grandchildren, and six great-great grandchildren.
Two daughters, Katie and Rosa, died previously, as did four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, a great-great grandchild, and three brothers and three sisters.
Last rites will be held at the Prugh Chapel at 2 p.m. Wednesday. The Rev. Robert Fronterhouse of Iowa Wesleyan college, Mt. Pleasant will officiate. Burial will be in Kossuth cemetery.
