Leonard “Cap” Tromblay, 86, of Rudyard, died Tuesday evening, January 6, 2015, at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. He had been a resident of McKinley Manor in Sault Ste. Marie the past three years. He will be sorely missed, friends said, as he was the life of the party.

He was born December 3, 1928, to Captain Alexander and Hilda (nee Johnson) Tromblay on Ellsworth Street in St. Ignace.

Mr. Tromblay was graduated from LaSalle High School. He then entered the Korean War. On the G.I. Bill, he earned a degree in teaching from Ferris State University. He taught school in Caro for three years, and then two years at Jackson Business University. In 1963, he answered an ad for a business teacher in Rudyard, and he taught there until July 1, 1989. He was considered a beloved teacher in the Rudyard school system, where he was very active in student affairs.

He married the love of his life, Carol Langohr, in January 1964. The family made their home in St. Ignace until 1970, when they moved to Rudyard.

He was active in the Rudyard Lions Club. He enjoyed bowling and horseshoes. A horseshoe tournament is named in his honor at Rudyard.

Mr. Tromblay was an honorary member of the St. Ignace Fire Department, as he entertained at the annual dinner with his one-liners and jokes for 32 years. A book is now being produced about his jokes. The book, which Mr. Tromblay wrote and edited, will be available in the spring.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rudyard. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus 10777 in Rudyard.

He is survived by a son and his family, Brian and Linda Tromblay of Safford, Arizona; a daughter and her family, Jeananne and Brian Trefil of Waterford, and four granddaughters, Megan and Adrian Thomas, Regina Tromblay, Kaila Trefil, and Marissa Trefil. He is also survived by a sister, Mary Tromblay of St. Ignace, three nephews and their families, David and Diane Kokko, Kevin and Carolyn Kokko, and Gregory and Nancy Kokko, all of the metro Detroit area, and a special former student and friend, Chari Fischer of Trout Lake.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Tromblay was preceded in death by his wife, Carol, who died August 27, 1989, at the age of 50; two sisters, Elinor Kokko, who died April 12, 2010, and Sylvia Tromblay, who died in 1961, and a brother-inlaw, Ben Kokko, who died March 30, 2011.

Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, January 12, at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rudyard with Father Joseph Vandannoor officiating. Visitation was from 10 a.m. to time of the service at the church and also Sunday, January 11, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Dodson Funeral Home in St. Ignace. Parish prayers were at 7 p.m. with Deacon Roger Bygrave officiating.

Burial will be in North Rudyard Cemetery in the spring.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Leonard “Cap” Tromblay Scholarship Fund, Rudyard Area Community Foundation, P.O. Box 394, Rudyard, MI 49780, with envelopes available at Dodson Funeral Home, who assisted the family with arrangements.
