Susan was born on June 30, 1954, in St. Joseph, to Francis and Joan (Carpenter) Wampler.
She was a graduate of Central High School and attended Hillyard Technical Center. She was most recently employed at Johnson Controls.
She married Dennis Abernathy. He passed away on June 28, 1985.
Susan was a Christian and loved her family. Her grandchildren held a special place in her heart. She was patriotic and the USA was very important to her. Susan enjoyed her life on the farm, living out in the country and scouting bargains at flea markets. Her special four-legged family member, Joey, was her fury friend and companion on the farm.
In addition to her husband, Susan is preceded in death by her sister, Rena Jo Cox; father-in-law and mother-in-law, George and Betty Abernathy.
Surviving family includes: her parents; children, Roger Abernathy (Rita), Ft. Rucker, Ala., Raychel Phillipe (Ryan), Savannah, Heather Emmendorfer (Brian,), Savannah; siblings Gary Dean Wampler (Barbara), Elsie Karns, Patricia Wampler, all of St. Joseph, Kelly Wampler (Jeannette), Fillmore, Mo.; sister-in-law, Rayetta Schweder (Tim); and grandchildren, Gage Emmendorfer, Addison Emmendorfer, Reed Phillippe and Ryder Phillippe.
Visitation after 9 a.m. on Wednesday, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, at our chapel in St. Joseph.
Service: 10 a.m. Thursday, March 5, 2015, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith & Sidenfaden Chapel in St. Joseph.
Interment: Long Branch Cemetery.
The family has requested memorials be made to the Minnie Cline Playground Fund or National Military Heritage Museum. As published in the St. Joseph News-Press.
