He ran a china and glassware importing business in Richmond from 1836 to 1861 and again from 1866 to 1869. He enlisted in the Courtney (Henrico) artillery, CSA July 31, 1861 and served until the end of the war. His original store burned during the war and he had to re-build afterward. After the war many could not afford his products so he closed the store. He then became a clerk, and later principal agent, with the Richmond & Danville railroad. After a few years with the railroad he became a clerk at the Augusta Female Academy, now Mary Baldwin College, in Staunton, Virginia (where his second wife was from), until he retired in 1887.

As he and his second wife got to the age where they could not care for themselves effectively they each went to live with different relatives. Thus, William died in Richmond and his wife in Staunton.
