Louis G. Matthews, 86, of Danbury, husband of Victoria (Gabriel) Matthews, passed peacefully at home to his eternal rest on February 7, 2015, lovingly surrounded by his family. He was born in Danbury, Connecticut on June 19, 1928, the son of the late George A. and Bahia (Azar) Matthews. Following his graduation from Danbury High School he attended Tufts University, receiving a bachelor of Science degree in 1948. He received a bachelor of law degree from Boston University in 1951. After his admission to the practice of law he was admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court of Connecticut, before the Board of Immigration Appeals and before the U.S. Supreme Court. Lou served in the U.S. Army with Military Intelligence during the Korean War. During his years in private practice Lou served as Assistant Clerk of the Superior Court for Fairfield County at Danbury and tax attorney for the City of Danbury. He was also counsel to the Redevelopment Agency for the City of Danbury, the Midtown East Urban Renewal Program, served as president of the Danbury Bar Association and as a member of the Danbury Republican Town Committee. He joined the Immigration & Naturalization Service for the U.S. Department of Justice as a general attorney in 1976 until his retirement in 1993. During that time he served as U.S. Naturalization Examiner, Trial Attorney and on the Litigation and Legal Advice Staff in Hartford, CT, San Antonio, TX; and New York, NY. Lou was a proud member of the Danbury Lions Club serving on numerous committees and most notably was active in creating the Lions Low Vision Support Group, was named a Melvin Jones Fellow and received the Connecticut Knight of the Blind Award. Since his retirement Lou taught American Citizenship classes in the Adult Continuing Education Program in Danbury. During his professional career Lou also served as a member of the Danbury Republican Town Committee, as President of the Danbury Young Republican Club, as a member of the Board of Directors and legal counsel to DATAHR (now known as Ability Beyond) during its formative years, as President of the Southwestern Connecticut Tufts Club, as President of the Parish Council at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church in Danbury and as a member of the American Legion.
Lou would like to be remembered as a man who has dealt with others honestly and with compassion in both his personal and his professional life. The most rewarding aspects of his life have revolved around his wife, Victoria of sixty-two years, his four children and fourteen grandchildren, the privilege he has known to help those who seek U.S. citizenship and people coping with low vision, and his involvement with the loving St. George Church Community.
Mr. Matthews is also survived by his children, George M. and wife Theresa and their children George Jr., Sarah and Paul of Boston, MA; Gregory P. and wife Laurie and their children Claire and Helen of Chappaqua, N.Y.; Sandra M. Mackenzie and husband John and their children John M., Andrew, Luke and Mark of North Salem, N.Y.; Louis G. Jr. and wife Corinne and their children James, Hannah, Mary, Zachary and Kathryn of Milford, PA; his brother Abraham and wife Anna of Trumbull, CT; his sister-in-law Darlene Matthews of Bethel, CT; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, Lou was predeceased by his brother Fred.
Lou's family wants to express its deep appreciation for the extraordinary compassionate care provided by the wonderful nurses, home health aides and administrators of Regional Hospice and Home Care of Western CT, Western Connecticut Visiting Nurses and all other caregivers.
The Rite of Burial will be conducted on Wednesday, February 11, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. in St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church, 125 Kohanza St., Danbury.
Interment will follow in Wooster Cemetery, Danbury with military honors.
The family will receive friends at St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church on Tuesday, February 10, 2015 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The Trisagion Prayer Service will be offered on Tuesday evening at 7:30.
