Dorothy Carter Boone CHARLESTON - Dorothy Mildred Carter Boone, 95, widow of William A. Boone, died Friday, January 23, 2015. She was born in Varnville, South Carolina on August 2, 1919 to Mildred Mahaley Dempsey Carter and Heyward Lee Carter. She was raised in Hampton, South Carolina with her brother, Leon Johnson Carter, and her sister, Evelyn Josephine Carter, along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins with whom she stayed close throughout her life. Mrs. Boone graduated from Hampton High School in 1937 and moved to Charleston that year to attend, and later graduate from, Stokes Business College. During World War II, she worked as a stenographer at the Charleston Naval Shipyard while her husband served in the Pacific. Mrs. Boone was actively involved in her husband's career with Metropolitan Life Insurance Company and enjoyed enduring friendships with Mr. Boone's colleagues and their families. Mrs. Boone was a member of First Families of South Carolina, the Rebecca Motte Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Colonial Dames of the XVII Century, the Society of the War of 1812, and the Society of St. Thomas and St. Denis. Mrs. Boone was a fifty year member of Northbridge Baptist Church and a member of the Miriam Sunday School Class. She was a dedicated volunteer in the church's outreach programs and various activities benefiting the needy. She is predeceased by her mother and father, her husband, and her brother and sister, as well as her dear cousins Sylvia Enos and Mary Alice Bittenbender. She is survived by her daughter, Heyward Suzanne Boone, and her husband, Al Katz, of Charleston, South Carolina; her son, William A. Boone, Jr., and his wife, Michelle, of Atlanta, Georgia; and her grandsons, Carter Jernigan of San Francisco, California, and Case Jernigan and his wife, Cassandra Shaw, of New York, New York. She is also survived by many close nieces, nephews, and cousins, as well as her husband's extended family. Services will be held on Thursday, January 29, 2015, at eleven o'clock at Grace Episcopal Church, 98 Wentworth Street in Charleston. A reception will follow in the church parish hall. A private burial will take place at St. Thomas and St. Denis Churchyard.
