Ray Iams Throckmorton Jr., 87, of Willowbrook, Ill., formerly of Manhattan, Kansas, died on July 1, 2011.

Mr. Throckmorton died peacefully with his three children at his bedside on July 1, 2011. Ray was the son of Ray Iams Throckmorton, an emeritus Dean of Agriculture (Throckmorton Plant Sciences Center) and Marcia Story Throckmorton, a professor of Home Economics, both at Kansas State University.

After serving in the U.S. Navy as a carrier fighter pilot, Ray received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from KSU in 1948, where he was a founding member of the KSU Sigma Chi chapter and a Life Loyal Sig.

His distinguished career as an engineer in product planning and development with International Harvester lasted over 3O years. He held many patents, published numerous technical papers, and was often a keynote speaker in the fields of agronomy and agriculture.

Throughout the years, Ray volunteered his time with the Boy Scouts, Little League, and Mended Hearts at Good Samaritan Hospital.

His beautiful yard showcased his love of and talent for gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, first wife, Mildred "Mickie" Terrar Throckmorton (KSU, Class of 1948), and his sister, Celeste Jane Throckmorton Logan.
