The De Smidts emigrated from Holland in April of 1848. They arrived in New York on July 3. They continued their journey by water up the Hudson River to Albany, on the Erie Canal to Buffalo, and on the Great Lakes to Milwaukee. They were o n the water for seventy eight days. From Milwaukee they went by ox-drawn wagon to Holland, Wisconsin which is south of Cedar Grove, Wisconsin. This took four days. There Abraham bought fifty acres of land and built a log house 18 x 24 feet which became their first home in America. The next few years were spent in clearing the land, adding to their acreage, erecting better buildings, and taking their part in the life of this pioneer community in which they were highly respected. Anna and Wilhelmina moved to New York state, peter and Francena to Iowa, and Abraham Jr. to Michigan.
