Son of Richard Rowland Avery (d.1847) and Jerusha (Hale) Avery.

His paternal grandparents were Andrew Avery Jr and Eunice (Rowland) Avery.

He married, first, in 1856 at Yellow Springs,WI, Sarah Caroline Otto.

He married, second, on Sep 17,1874 at Orion,WI, Delilah (Tisdale) Andrews. She was a widow of Edward Andrews. She was born at New York City in 1830, a daughter of William Tisdale and Rhoda (Dutton) Tisdale.

Children(by first marriage): Julia Otto Avery, Mariah Otto Avery Yeeger(first wife of Samuel Orien Yeager), John Otto Avery, Francis James "Frank" Avery, Richard Avery, Amplias Hale Avery, Caroline Avery Payne, and Angeline Valettie "Fantie" Avery.
