J. Quane Kenyon died of natural causes at a Boise hospital on February 24, 2015, while surrounded by his loving family. J Quane Kenyon entered the world on April 9th, 1938, in Oakland, California, born to John (Jack) Kenyon and Ella Mae Ince Kenyon. Quane grew up in the Bay area and then moved to Salt Lake City in 1952. He graduated from Murray High School in 1955 and married Geraldean Wood in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on October 5, 1958. Quane and Gerrie had four children; Quane Kenyon, Jr., (Mariellen), Tracy Kenyon Leavitt (John), Stephen Kenyon (Tay) and Craig Kenyon (Tonia). Quane was a lifelong journalist working for the Associated Press from January 1, 1970, to his retirement on January 1, 1999. During much of this time Quane wrote a weekly statewide newspaper column called “Inside the Capitol.” Quane was the epitome of an unbiased, straightforward journalist. During his 29 years with the Associated Press he wrote thousands of news stories detailing the news as we lived it. During this time he interviewed public figures ranging from President Ronald Reagan, to condemned murderers, and plenty of politicians. His skill was his ability to cogently tell the who's what's and why's of each story. He also served as a corespondent to Meet the Press. Elected as President of the Idaho Press Club and was active in the Boise Chapter of Sigma Delta Chi for professional journalists. Upon Quane's retirement, the Idaho Legislature passed a concurrent resolution honoring how his “Contributions to the Public Knowledge of Government and the Legislative Precess” benefited the citizens of Idaho. In addition he was given the “Friend of the City” (Boise) award by Mayor Brent Coles. In 2006, he was approached by longtime Secretary of State, Pete Cenarrusa to write his Biography. Published in 2009 “Bizkaia to Boise, the Journey of an Idaho Basque.” The first printing sold out, so Dad liked to call it a best seller. In addition to politics, Dad loved bowling, gardening camping, and was a passionate Boise State fan. He and mom bowled on leagues for decades, making many lifelong friends along the way. To each of you we say thank you. Quane is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gerrie, his sister Janice Gensel, of Providence Utah, his four children, and 10 pride and joy grandchildren J.Q. Bryce, Curtis, Kaycee, Kaidree, Hunter, Clay, Cassie, Katherine, and Lindy. Quane was preceded in death by his parents.
