The first name of my great-great-aunt Alice comes from her 1945 delayed birth certificate,* and the same source lists Mossy Grove, Tennessee, as her place of birth. She married John Mathis, her first husband, on January 5, 1899, in Morgan County, Tennessee, and had two sons, Peter G. and John M., before her husband's death on September 22, 1901 (the family was living in Morgan County when the 1900 Census was taken). When the 1910 Census was taken, Alice and her two sons were living with her widowed mother, Celia "Sealy" (Langley) Goddard, my great-great-grandmother, in Morgan County (Celia died in 1918 in the same county**). In 1924, Alice was living in Akron, Ohio (according to the U.S. City Directories, 1822-1995), and six years later she married her second husband, widower Frank Rardin, on March 17, 1930, in Summit County, Ohio. When the 1930 Census was taken, Alice and Frank were living in his native Jackson County, West Virginia, but had returned to her native Morgan County when the 1940 Census was taken.

(*The middle name for Alice's father [i.e., Francis Marion Goddard], my great-great-grandfather, comes from her delayed birth certificate.)

(**Alice was the informant on her mother's death record.)
