James Howard Curtis, 87, died November 14, 1999 at Heritage Place in Kalispell.

He was born September 26, 1912 on a homestead near Polson to Thomas J. and Isabelle E. Appleby Curtis.

He moved up to the Flathead Valley as a very young child. He attended grade school and high school in Flathead County and worked as a tin smith part-time while attending school.

He also worked in the Civilian Conservation Corps camps for a while during the depression and served in the National Guard for 20 years.

James enlisted in the Navy on March 21, 1943 and was honorably discharged from Personnel Separation Center USNB in Bremerton, Washington on December 25, 1945.

On July 3, 1936 he was married to Olga Pannico Pettit in Kalispell.

James worked in sheet metal shops until he was employed by the Kalispell Police Department where he was a police officer for 20 years. For the last two years on the force, he was chief of police.

He was past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, a member of the American Legion and in 1951 he was the state president of the Policeman's Protective Association. He was also involved with the local AARP and the Senior Center and was a member of Christ Church Episcopal in Kalispell.

He resided at Well-Life for 11 months prior to his last two months at Heritage Place.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Olga; one stepson, Robert G. Pettit; his parents; two brothers and four sisters.

He is survived by one sister, Edith Rein, residing at Heritage Place; several nephews and nieces and his extended family in Texas.
