The Rev. Allen F. Acor, age 81, of 492 Buckhorn Road, Bloomsburg, went to be with his Lord at 8:17 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015, at Geisinger-Bloomsburg Health Care Center, Bloomsburg, where he was a patient for 10 days. His death followed a brief illness.

Born in Danville on Jan. 21, 1934, he was a son of the late Lawrence and Helen (Strausser) Acor. He resided in Madison Township since 1966.

Allen was a graduate of the former North Mont High School, Turbotville, in 1952. He attended Susquehanna University, Selinsgrove, for one year before enlisting in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War for two years. Following his military service, he enrolled at the former Bloomsburg State Teachers College, graduating in 1958 with a B.S. degree in chemistry. He received his M.S. degree from Union College, Schenectady, N.Y.

He began his teaching career at the former Ringtown High School in Schuylkill County, teaching there from 1958 to 1964. He then taught at Millville High School from 1964 until retiring from teaching in 1993. During his teaching career, he taught chemistry, physics, biology and mathematics. He also served as the soccer coach and basketball coach at both schools. For many years, he also served as a scorekeeper and timer at many Millville athletic games.

Allen attended the Wesley Seminary, Washington, D.C., from 1976 to 1980 and was ordained as a United Methodist minister, preaching at various churches from 1976 until retiring again in 2015. He served the Buckhorn-Rupert Parish for 19 years from 1976 to 1995; more recently, the Mooresburg-Hendrickson United Methodist Churches. During the course of his career as a minister, he conducted hundreds of funerals and weddings throughout Columbia, Montour and lower Luzerne counties for members and non-members alike.

He was a member of the Washington Lodge 265, F&AM, and Caldwell Consistory, both of Bloomsburg. In addition, he was a former president of the North Branch League; served as a Little League coach; AYSO soccer coach; Cub Scout leader and Jerseytown 4-H Club leader.

Allen was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, the former Shirley M. Dill, on Dec. 15, 2008.

Surviving are three sons: Allen F. Acor II, and his wife, Gail, Richard L. Acor, and his wife, Rhonda, Robert J. Acor, and his wife, Michelle, all of Bloomsburg; three daughters: Debra A., wife of Larry E. Kuntz Jr., Hanover; Kimberly S., wife of Kenneth E. Long, Bloomsburg; and Merry E. Acor, at home; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Marie, wife of Mahlon Eckroth, Bloomsburg; and two cousins who were very close to him, Richard Baylor, and his wife, Sue, Danville; and Donald Acor, and his wife, Debbie, Selinsgrove.

Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. in the Dean W. Kriner Inc. Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, with the Rev. David D. Rosenberger, pastor of the New Testament Assembly of God Church, Millville, officiating. Interment will be at Dutch Hill Cemetery, Madison Township, with full military honors by the combined VFW group. Friends may call Thursday from 6-8 p.m. or Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at 11 a.m. Masonic memorial services will be Thursday at 8 p.m.
