The son of William and Nancy Patton Abraham of Pennsylvania. In 1854 he began the study of medicine and in 1857 he graduated from Starling Medical College of Columbus, Ohio. Isaac served in the Civil War as a captain in the 114th regiment Ohio Infantry. After leaving the military Isaac moved to Harrisonville, Missouri and opened his own practice.
He married Elizabeth J. Thompson on January 1, 1857. Isaac then married Dora Jack on May 5, 1868.
