Death of Wesley Drake
One of the Oldest Native Born Sons of Johnson County at Time of Death.

Wesley Drake died Friday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock at his home on Madison and Yandes streets in this city. He had been ill all summer showing a gradual decline. Advanced age combined with the effects of injuries received a few years ago from a fall while working on a building, and from which he never fully recovered, caused his death.
Mr. Drake was born January 20, 1834, on Stotts Creek not far from Beech Grove. He was the son of Gideon and Susan Drake. When about 14 years of age he came to Franklin where he learned the carpenter’s trade following this all the rest of his life. Perhaps there is no other citizen in Franklin who had assisted in building so many of the residences found in the city as he. Not until this year did he give up his labor. For almost 60 years he had worked at this trade. When he moved to Franklin there were but four house is east of the J.M.& I. and north of Jefferson street. He had seen all that part of the city built up and had helped to build many of the houses. So far as has come to the knowledge of the Democrat, Mr. Drake at the time of his death had lived longer in Franklin than any other resident now living in the city.
Mr. Drake was twice married. His last marriage was to Miss Susan McClain, March 21, 1861, who with three children, Mrs. Samuel List, Mrs. Myrtle Peggs and Will Drake, survive. Besides these he leaves two grandchildren, Wesley List and Mary Catherine Peggs; four brothers, Josiah Drake of this city, Amos Drake of Martinsville, Joseph Drake of Greensburg, and Gideon Drake of Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. C. C. Burns of Greensburg and Charlotte Ballard of Franklin.
Deceased was a member of the Methodist church and a faithful attendant, whenever able, at all its services. He was a veteran of the civil war, enlisting in Company L, 79th Indiana Infantry, August 14, 1862. He served until the close of the war and received an honorable discharge June 27, 1865. He was in many of the important conflicts and his comrades say that no braver soldier ever carried a musket. Since 1884 he had been a member of Wadsworth Post G.A.R. The funeral services which were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 from Grace M.E. Church conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. D. Batchelor, assisted by Rev. R. R. Bryan of Rockport, were taken in charge at Greenlawn cemetery by the Post and the ritual ceremonies of the G.A.R. observed in an impressive way as the body was laid to rest.
Mr. Drake was a man of quiet, agreeable manners, thoroughly honest and sincere, devoted to his family, and always ready to befriend a neighbor. He was greatly esteemed by all who knew him.
