dau. of Phineas & Anna (Walker) Freeland

from FAG Member Barbara Doxey:

She was a daughter of Phineas Freeland and Anna Walker. They had been born in Massachusetts but later owned a summer hotel in Claverack, Columbia County, New York. The first husband of Sarah (Sally) Freeland was William McCarshore who was born 15 Oct 1790, probably at Columbia County to Andrew McCarshore and Elizabeth Brower. William died before 19 Nov 1818 at Claverack, Columbia County, New York. He and Sarah (Sally) had been married 14 April 1814. I don't know if there were any children of this marriage.

Many years later Sarah (Sally) married in Massachusetts the widower Benjamin Davenport who was the uncle of her brother-in-law. They had a daughter who married and died in childbirth when she was about 25 years old.

She died at the home of her brother James Freeland in Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. He was a well-known merchant who had been born in Claverack, Columbia County, New York in 1799 and died in Brooklyn in 1878. When he was very old he was appointed District Director of Internal Revenue for Long Island by President U. S. Grant.
