"Nilly" (as it is spelled on his registration) filled out his WWI draft registration on June 5, 1917, and claimed exemption from the draft because of "support of wife and child." The child was a daughter, Alta Jean Kelly born on March 4, 1917. He married about a year earlier as N. C. Kelly to Addie St. Clair, on May 20, 1916, in Hood County, Texas.

Nilly's wife Ada (called Addie) St.Clair (8/28/1896-11/23/1993) remarried after Nilly's death to Alonzo Nelson Mahan in the 1920s. They stayed in Texas for a while, but eventually moved to California. Alonzo had two children of his own, but adopted Alta Jean.

Alta Jean Kelly Mahan married William W. Reed. She died May 28, 2004 in San Rafael, CA.
