James W. Lewis married Susan Clemmer in Lincoln County, N.C. on December 26, 1840. Twelve children were born to the couple. Their oldest son, William Franklin Lewis, was killed at the battle of Gettysburg in the fight for Southern Independence. The parents and siblings of James W. Lewis are unknown.
