Marion Thomas (M.T.) Blackmon age 91 of Palestine entered Heaven, February 18, 2015. He was born September 13, 1923 in Milano, TX., to Tom and Mary Poole Blackmon. Mr. Blackmon attended Bay City High School before serving as a Marine in WWII. He was in combat in the South Pacific at Peleliu, Guadalcanal and Okinawa receiving three purple hearts, among other medals. He also had a bit part in the movie Guadalcanal Diary where he met several movie stars including Lucille Ball and Dennis Morgan. M.T. met the love of his life, Gracie LaVerne Hughes, and they married April 10, 1950. Surrending to God’s call, he served as a Missionary Baptist preacher/ missionary from 1952 until his death; last sermon at age 90. He attended and loved Texas Baptist Inistute; served as Chaplain for the DAV; a Mason for 50 years (32nd Degree); and retired as a railroad engineer. His loves were preaching, family, horses, traveling, music, and eating catfish Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday at Bailey & Foster Chapel, Palestine with Donald Britton and Danny Bowman officiating. Interment will follow in Denson Cemetery, Grapeland. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, LaVerne, daughters, Becky Turner and husband Lance of Jacksonville, FL., Peggy Cox and husband Mike of Ponta, and Rebecca Camacho of San Marcos, TX., sons, George Blackmon and wife Martha of Rusk, Pat Blackmon and wife Pam of Elkhart, Jerry Blackmon and wife Debbie of Nacogdoches and Sam Blackmon and wife Marla of Waxahachie, TX., twenty grandchildren, and eighteen great grandchildren, a brother Mickey Blackmon and wife LaVerne of Palestine, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; Wanda Blackmon of Palestine, Margie Cox and husband Paul of Whitehouse, Bill and Shirley Hughes of Tyler, Larry and Wanice Hughes of Grapeland. He was preceded in death by his parents, a baby girl, son Mitchel Blackmon, grandchildren; Michael Cox and Cory Blackmon, sister Opal Rossetter and brother LeRoy Blackmon. Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Blackmon, Terry Blackmon, Mark Blackmon, Kevin Blackmon, Stephen Blackmon, Ty Whitworth, Kenneth Dunnam and Mike Parker.
