Ellen Cross, 85, was born on June 16, 1929 in Ennis, Texas and passed away in Midland, Texas on Thursday, January 1, 2015.
Ellen graduated from Big Spring High School when she was sixteen years old. She continued with her education and received her Bachelor's Degree in 1950 at North Texas State College. She finished her Master's Degree at Sul Ross in 1980. Delta Kappa Gama, and
Ellen married the love of her life George Cross in 1951, and helped him establish Cross Pharmacy in Marfa, Texas. She made a beautiful home for them and their four children; Carol Cross, Scott Cross, Vie Cross, Will Cross.
Ellen played the organ for church services weddings and funerals for over forty years.
Ellen was a member and officer of United Methodist Women, Delta Kappa Gamma, Century Culture Club, and Western District Texas Federation of Women's Clubs.
She pioneered kindergarten at Marfa Elementary after the state of Texas mandated the program in public schools; this got hundreds of five year olds off to a good academic start. Ellen was a certified bilingual teacher for early childhood and kindergarten for twenty-three years.
Ellen helped start and run the Art Gallery, a CO-OP of artists, as well as antique dealers, which was in business for eleven years. She also organized citywide garage sales in Marfa, Texas.
Ellen participated in various needle work projects which benefited the homeless and needy children. After moving to Manor Park in Midland in 2009, she gathered other residents that were in independent living and taught to knit as they made throws for people in the Mabee Center.
Ellen's accomplishments included; recording an album with Gene Richardson, Cub and Brownie Scout Leaders, accompanying for UIL Solo and Ensemble, participating in Big Band Dance Club, quilting, cooking great meals, selling and collecting antiques.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00p.m. on Friday, January 9, 2015 at First United Methodist Church in Marfa, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests any memorial contributions to be made to First United Methodist Church in Marfa, Texas and to Manor Park Endowment Fund in Memory of Ellen Cross.
