The son of Wylie and Emmaline Shaw Brasfield. Parents died with a large estate when he was young. Raised by his uncle, Soloman High Shaw, a wealthy planter in Tennessee. He had a sister named Elimina Elizabeth Brasfield who died in 1845. He married Sarah Nunn in 1846. She died in a short time. He then married Martha Debra Kennedy in 1847 in Maury Co., Tennessee. This union produced 6 children,5 of whom lived to adulthood. Three were educated as physicians. The children were: Soloman W., Demitra K., Emily E., Samuel G., Emma Shaw and Albert. G. S. served the Confederacy in the 15th Tennessee Cavalry, at numerous times under the command of Gen. Nathan Bedford Forest.
