Isaiah's wound during the war continued to be a problem for him throughout his life. He applied for a pension from the State of Alabama under the 1883 (and subsequent acts) providing for relief of maimed or disabled soldiers. His 1887 application for a pension mentions that he is "easily overcome by heat, subject to fall and does frequently fall while at work and that he suffers much pain from wound." He was then farming in Tallapoosa County, AL. Isaiah Durham Strother died on 4 Dec 1894 at age 58y 3m.
