Vernon L. Meyer, age 82 of Keyesport, passed away on Saturday, February 14, 2015, at Carlyle Healthcare Center in Carlyle, Illinois.
Mr. Meyer was born on September 6, 1932, in Brookside Township, Illinois, a son of Louis C. and Ruth L. (Robinet) Meyer. He married Joan G. Coleman at Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Collinsville on January 31, 1953, and she survives in Carlyle.
In addition to his wife Joan, Mr. Meyer is also survived by 2 sons – Louis C. Meyer, II and wife Lura of Collinsville, and Vernon Meyer, Jr. and wife Janet of Caseyville; 6 grandchildren – Louis III, Corey, Brandon, Jason, Rebecca, and Danielle; 7 great grandchildren; a brother – James R. Meyer and wife Vivian of Keyesport; and a sister – Catherine Hoppin and husband Rich of Arizona.
Vernon worked as a carman for Norfolk Southern Railroad for 44 years. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Carmen, and served as the financial secretary of the union for 16 years. Mr. Meyer was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Carlyle and loved the outdoors. His hobbies included fishing and hunting, boating and water skiing, gardening, cooking, and canning.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Monday, February 16, 2015, at Zieren Funeral Home in Carlyle with Rev. Steve Sommerer, officiating. Interment will follow at McKendree Chapel Cemetery in Keyesport.
