Eldora J. Wooddell, 97 passed away on September 3 at the Christian Community Home in Hudson, WI. Born July 28, 1915, in Richland Center, to William Tyler and Julia (Hanson) Tyler. The family moved several times during her childhood, finally settling in the Neilsville area. In her early teens, Eldora left home to work so that she could attend high school in Ithica, WI.
Eldora married George M. Wooddell in 1937. Together they co-owned a cranberry marsh in Cranmoor with George's brother Harold Wooddell following the tradition of their many Potter relatives. After selling the marsh, the Wooddell's owned and operated businesses in Wisconsin Rapids over the years, the latest being Lakeside Ornamental Iron.
Eldora was active in the United Methodist Church, and was known for her hospitality and excellent cooking. She spent many years helping with the school lunch programs in Cranmoor and in Wisconsin Rapids. Eldora also took on the job of Administrator of a PEO home in Illinois for a couple of years. Upon their retirement they moved to Venice, FL, where they lived for 15 years socializing with many of their friends from Wisconsin Rapids and enjoying the nice weather. As they got older, they felt the need to be closer to family so they moved back to Wisconsin Rapids, to be near their daughter, Ada (Mrs. Richard) Brown and her family. When the Browns retired and moved to Winter Haven, FL, the Wooddell's then moved to Hudson, to be near their daughter Julie (Mrs. Edward) Mealy. After the death of her husband in 1997, Eldora moved to Wintergreen Senior apartments in Hudson, where she lived for 14 years until her illness in mid- August.
Eldora is survived by many of George's cousins; a half-brother, Martin Tyler; and several Tyler nieces and nephews; daughters, Ada (Mrs. Richard) Brown of Winter Haven, FL; and Julie (Mrs. Edward) Mealy of Hudson; grandchildren, Suzanne (Mrs. Robert) Dampier of West Allis; Steven Brown of Dayton, Ohio; Scot Mealy of Atlanta, GA; Bethany Mealy of Mullingar, Ireland; great-grandchildren, Jennifer (Mrs. Chris) Larkee of Milwaukee; Melodie (Mrs. Steve) Jungmann of Milwaukee; Abigail Brown of Dayton, Ohio; step-great-grandchildren, Matthew Wills of Atlanta, GA; and Steven Wyatt of Dayton, Ohio; and great-great- grandaughter, Laren Jungmann of Milwaukee.
Memorial Services for Eldora Wooddell will be held 11 a.m. Friday, September 21, 2012, at United Methodist Church, 441 Garfield Street, Wisconsin Rapids. Interment will take place at Forest Hill Cemetery in Wisconsin Rapids.
