Samuel Farwell was the second child of six born to John Farwell and Sarah Edgecomb Pickett. He was born in Packersfield, NH, but the name was changed to Nelson in 1814.

At the age of 26 he married Eunice Stoddard, the daughter of Richard Stoddard and Rachel Hill, on 4 June 1795, at Nelson, NH. They had twelve children:
Lucretia (19 Mar 1796 - 13 May 1863)
Eunice (31 Aug 1797 - 7 Feb 1871)
Silas (b. 28 May 1799)
Samuel (13 Mar 1801 - 29 Aug 1857)
Mary Polly (b. 19 Feb 1803)
Henry (b. 6 Aug 1805)
John (15 Jun 1807 - 25 Sep 1900)
Darius (8 Feb 1809 - 4 Feb 1898)
Sarah (29 Jan 1811 - 19 Nov 1892)
Addison (b. 7 May 1813)
Amanda ( 20 May 1815 - 11 Jun 1848)
Electa (1 Mar 1817 - 17 Dec 1841)

They settled on the home farm and he became the owner and took care of his parents in their old age. About 1815, he fell from a barn on the farm of Richard Farwell, receiving injuries from which he never fully recovered. They were buried on the home farm, and some years later, their son Darius had them moved to the Harrisville Cemetery, fearing that if the farm left the family, the grave sites would not be cared for.
