Mrs. Anna G. Stroeing

ST. CLOUD, MINN - Mrs. Anna G. (Nathe) Stroeing, 84, formerly of 123 - 26th Ave N, St. Cloud and a resident of Good Shepard Rest Home, Sauk Rapids, died today (January 20, 1970).

Anna Nathe Stroeing was born December 21, 1885, in Meire Grove, Minn. the first of the fourteen children born to Herman and Katherine (Ortmann) Nathe. On November 6, 1912 she married Henry Stroeing at St. John's Church in Meire Grove, Minn. The couple moved to Lastrup, Morrison County, Minn to a farm they purchased in Section 18 of Granite Township. The farm is 1/4 mile east of the village of Lastrup.

Some time after the birth of their fifth son, Vernon F Stroeing in 1926, the Stroeing family left Lastrup and moved to 123 - 26th Ave N in St. Cloud, Minn.

Mrs. Stroeing is survived by four sons: Alcuin, Melrose; Leander, Foley, Minn; Del and Vern, St. Cloud; 16 grandchildren and four great grandchildren; brothers and sisters; Mrs. Joseph (Eleanore) Tiemann, Theodore Nathe and Fred Nathe, Melrose; Mrs. Leo (Ceil) Klaphake, New Munich; Mrs Frank (Jenny) Reller, St. Cloud; and Bernadine McCoy, Sherveport, LA.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Stroeing in July 1969, and son Lambert Stroeing on November 20, 1940. (Note 1)

She was a member of Christian Mothers, St. Theresia Society of St. Anthony's Parish and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 428.

Funeral services are at 11:00am on Thursday at St. Anthony's Church with burial at Assumption Cemetery in St. Cloud.

Friends may call at the Daniel Funeral Home after 2:00pm Wednesday. St. Anthony's parish will say parish prayers at the funeral home at 8:00pm Wednesday.

Marriage
On November 6, 1912, when Anna Nathe was 26 years old, she married Henry Stroeing at St. John's Catholic Church in Meire Grove, Minn. The marriage was performed by Rev. Martin Schmitt, OSB and witnessed by the couple's siblings, Frank Stroeing and Johanna "Jenny" Nathe. Other witnesses were Bernard Nathe and Bernadina Stroeing.

Anna Nathe is first child born to Herman and Katherine (Ortmann) Nathe.

In November 1962, Henry and Anna marked their 50th wedding anniversary with an open house celebration at the VFW Club in St. Cloud, Minn.

The Lastrup Farm
After Henry and Anna Stroeing were wed in November 1912; they, along with two other farming families from their St. Martin neighborhood, moved north to a farm they had purchased very near to the village of Lastrup in Morrison County. The farm was located in Section 18 of Granite Township and the Stroeings purchased it from Robert Harsch for $4,000.

Morrison County was not experiencing the drought like Stearns County, so many Stearns farmers either 1) purchased land and moved north or 2) rented pasture land and drove their livestock there for the summer. As stated above, the Stroeings purchased their farm.

Family on the Move
After Vernon was born in Sept 1926, Henry and Anna left Lastrup and moved to 123 - 26th Ave North in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Henry worked at the Sportsman's Bar on St. Germain Street in St. Cloud until retiring in 1954.

In an effort to help support the family, Alcuin was sent to work on the Nathe farm near Greenwald and Lambert was sent to his Uncle Joe & Aunt Eleanor (Nathe) Tiemann's farm north of Melrose.

Note 1

One son, Lambert Stroeing, preceded her in death on November 20, 1940 - a few days after the Armistice Day Blizzard in Minnesota.

Sadly, just two months after Anna Stroeing's death, on March 16, 1970, her son Leander "Lee" Stroeing died.

The 8 months from July 1969 to March 1970, three members of the Stroeing family died:

Anna - January 1970
Leander March 1970
