Cecil Newbern Bahr, beloved husband and dear father passed away on Saturday, July 5, at his home in the West Salem Hills. He is survived by his wife Mary, his 11 children and their spouses: Barbara Bahr, Sherrie Bahr, Terry and Janie Bahr, Steven and Laureen Bahr, Betty Jo and Vic Smith, Gary and Holly Bahr, Christy and Kevin Beckstrom, Mike and Jeanie Bahr, Kim Bahr, Dean and Mira Bahr, and Brian Bahr. Cecil had 30 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
Cecil was born in 1927 in Cedarview, Utah, to Jessie and Albert Andrew Bahr. He was the 9th of 12 children and is survived by his sisters Alice Babiracki, Leona Rowley and brother LaVere Bahr.
Cecil was married to his first wife Barbara Beth in 1948 in the Idaho Falls Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. They lived in several towns in eastern Oregon and Idaho. The family moved to Salem in 1967 to their small farm in West Salem. After Barbara's death in 1977, Cecil married Mary Lou in the Salt Lake LDS temple in 1978. They continued to live in West Salem, where they raised their family.
Cecil graduated from Payette High School and immediately joined the army. He was assigned to Japan as part of the Occupation Forces. His professional life included managing Standard Service Stations, and the US Postal Service, from which he retired in 1992. In addition to his regular work, Cecil maintained a small farm and officiated for various sports.
Cecil was very involved in his church and held many lay positions. For the past 20 years he was an LDS Chaplain at the Salem Hospital. He also served as an ordinance worker at the Portland Temple, a member of the Monmouth Stake High Council, president of the West Salem Ward Sunday School, and ward executive secretary. He was very active with the Boy Scouts of America for many years.
For more than 50 years he officiated in football, basketball, and softball through the Willamette Valley with Salem officials associations. He also played basketball and softball. Cecil was involved in many service activities and was always willing to help others. Cecil loved his children and their families and was an ardent supporter of them and their activities. He has left a legacy of service, faith and hard work as he touched the lives of those around him.
